The Manufacturing Process Engineer is a vital position on the Cognito engineering team responsible for developing and implementing sustainable, scalable manufacturing processes, tooling, equipment and workflows in support of our engineering, production, sales and customer service goals.
Primary Verticals:
This position is directly responsible for improving the processes, documentation and efficiencies, applied at each stage of the product production cycle, from building-to-packaging-to-shipping.
Work with cross-functional teams, including engineering, manufacturing, assembly/packaging, marketing and contract manufacturers to establish and refine production processes and workflows.
Concurrently develop, review and improve detailed bills of operations (DBOO) for new and existing products with focus on manufacturing and assembly efficiency, quality control, repeatability and timely completion.
Help establish effective SOPs that serve as the process maps used by all production teams to achieve consistent, efficient, quality results at each stage of the product development process.
Assist design engineers and fabricators with developing tooling, fixtures and operations to improve product manufacturability and production efficiency.
Project manage development and integration of improved processes and SOPs with the engineering team to achieve uniform, full-cycle execution of the engineering and production workflows.
Focused Responsibilities
Assist in the development of manufacturing methods and processes, tooling, and equipment specifications to improve the efficiency and output of our manufacturing and production operations.
Develop engineering bill of materials and estimate labor hours using historical data, time studies and other applicable technologies.
Research and obtain tooling time/cost quotations from internal and external sources.
Work with the purchasing department to obtain raw material and outside purchase part pricing from qualified suppliers.
Write ancillary technical content to support new and existing product, to include descriptions of manufacturing processes, tooling steps and consumer installation, maintenance and use instructions.
Apply lean manufacturing principles to identify opportunities to reduce costs, variances, cycle times and to improve yields, reliability and manufacturing productivity.
Manage projects/initiatives from start to finish including, estimating hours and costs, maintaining schedules, and ensure that projects are executed on time with assistance from the design engineers and collaborative teams.
Provide ongoing engineering assistance to operations including troubleshooting of process operating problems, conducting special tests, developing reports, providing technical assistance as required, and reporting on production status and outcomes.
Responsible for helping to train production staff on approved production methods and general shop practices, including the creation and improvement of related training materials.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
BS degree in Engineering
Six Sigma, 5S, Lean Manufacturing process training;
Manual machining, fixture building, working with fabricators;
Process development, instructional documentation and training;
Hands-on experience with computer-aided engineering (CAE) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM);
SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM fluency and familiarity with other 2D or 3D engineering design and manufacturing tools (e.g., AutoCAD, ProE, MATLAB or other);
Technical writing skills and best practices;
Project manage from concept through completion on schedule with thorough and timely reporting.
High level of numeracy and technical competency, with an understanding of the applications used within design and production;
Ability to analyze and interpret data to help with problem-solving;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with teammates, contractors and vendors;
Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary teamwork toward the achievement of company goals.
