The Product Design Engineer is responsible for developing vehicle components, subassemblies, production fixtures, and product testing methods.
The Product Design Engineer will design and develop vehicle components that integrate modern technology and/or materials into 1960s-era vehicle architecture, to improve the function of the vehicle. He/she will model prototype designs and build and test functional prototypes, select suppliers, create BOMs, validate production level parts, and work with manufacturing engineering to ensure integration with manufacturing processes and systems.
Duties and Tasks Performed Critical to Success
The Product Design Engineer Designs will consider performance, function, and manufacturability constraints while balancing cost and schedule. He/she will ensure all components meet functional requirements, cost targets, and show measurable performance improvements and will use physical testing methods and static strength analysis as needed to validate specifications. The Product Design Engineer will plan, manage, and report workload, and will proactively communicate foreseeable challenges.
Key Functional and Relational Responsibilities
Develop multiple concurrent prototype and production car part drawings to communicate requirements and manufacturing needs to in-house fabricators and outsourced suppliers.
Design, create, test, analyze, and update production fixtures used to position, sub assemble, and hold meaningful levels of tolerance on car parts and assemblies such as suspension, body, steering, seats, controls, electronics, etc.
Create, revise, and issue 3D vehicle data and 2D drawings to meet growing and changing needs.
Create and maintain BOMs for components and subassemblies
Relationships and Roles within the Company
The Product Design Engineer will report directly to the Chief Engineer. The Product Design Engineer will work with other functional areas to ensure all cost, quality, and timing metrics are achieved.
The candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in Engineering (e.g. Mechanical, Technical Design) and 3-5 years’ experience in an automotive engineering capacity with an OEM or aftermarket automotive component manufacturer. He/she must have a working knowledge of all automotive systems. Must be proficient in Solidworks and Microsoft Office applications. Must have excellent problem solving, communication and interpersonal skills and a genuine interest and background in automotive design and desire to collaborate on new ideas and technologies. An interest in/knowledge of classic car restoration and/or Ford components and systems is a plus.
